PORTAGE -- Police said a Portage man driving while intoxicated struck and killed a teenage girl early Saturday morning, and then fled the area. Tori Rhein, 14, of the 5600 block of Kingman Avenue in Portage, died from her injuries before police or fire department officials arrived at the scene just after 2:30 a.m. Within the hour, Portage police arrested Daniel Sims, 22, at his 3427 Peninsula home in connection with the incident. According to a statement released by police, they took Sims to Portage Community Hospital where his blood alcohol concentration registered .27, more than three times the legal limit. Police responded to a call from a 13-year-old girl at 2:33 a.m. who said her friend had been hit by a silver sedan as the two walked south on Airport Road. The girl told police the driver stopped for a moment, and then drove away. The girl told police someone passed by, stopped and tried to help, but to no avail. According to police, after learning about the incident, a family member of Sims reported it to authorities. When police arrived at his address, Sims admitted his involvement in the crash and fleeing the scene, police said. Police also noted a silver 1999 Oldsmobile Alero at the address, with damage to the front end and windshield at Sims his home. Police tested Sims for alcohol after he showed signs of intoxication. Police charged Sims with causing a death while driving drunk and leaving the scene of a crash involving death -- both felonies -- and took him to the Porter County Jail. According to police, an initial investigation of the scene showed Sims drove his car across the centerline on Airport Road and it went from the southbound to the northbound lanes where it struck Rhein.
